Waxing Preparation:
For your safety, we are unable to perform waxing services on anyone with sunburned skin or recovering from a recent laser peel; using Alpha-Hydroxy Acids, Renova or Retin-A (currently or in the past month) Accutane (currently or in the past six months). It is imperative that the client is honest with the Esthetician during consultation as some medications can bring on skin sensitivity. Renova, Retin-A and other retinols dissolve the protective skin cells on your skin, making waxing un-advisable. If you are using these products, please inform your esthetician as there is risk of skin abrasion and injury. Vitamin C facial serums, Antibiotics, Glycolic facial cleansers, Salicylic acid treatments and Alpha Hydroxy peels can also cause skin sensitivity. Those who use these type of products may never experience any issues. However, every individual reacts differently, therefore it is advisable to stop these products 5 days prior waxing or postpone your waxing service until you can wait 5 days prior to waxing. Prior to discontinuing any prescribed topical products or medications, please consult with your physician or dermatologist.
Pre Wax Tips:
Your skin is often more sensitive during the time near your your period, and waxing can be more painful than normal. So your appointment shouldn't be any closer than 5 days before or after your period.
- Shower and lightly exfoliate your entire bikini area right before your appointment using warm, not hot water. Make sure you’re extra clean.
- Don’t use any lotions in bikini area.
- You need some hair growth for the wax to hold onto, but not too long which can make the waxing hurt more than it needs to. Hair should be 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch long. Follow the salon's specific instructions for trimming. Hair that is too long may not allow the wax to penetrate through the hair and can cause more pain.
Post Wax Tips: Nearly everyone who gets hair waxed experiences some redness post treatment. This can vary from a bit pink in the treated area for a few hours to having rash, red bumps and some bleeding and bruising. It is important to follow good Pre and Post Wax guidelines. For many women, red bumps and waxing appear to go hand in hand. These irritated bumps on waxed skin may show up immediately after a waxing or further on in the hair growth cycle as the result of ingrown hairs. In most cases, the red bumps which occur directly after waxing disappear after a few days.
- In the first 24 hours after treatment, gently wash area with lukewarm water and mild soap/bodywash.
- Hold off on taking hot baths/shower for 2 hours.
- Use a cold compress to soothe area if you feel discomfort or irritation.
- For the first 48 hours after treatment, avoid harsh products (i.e. skin care products that contain acids like alpha-hydroxy) which may cause an adverse reaction due to the increased sensitivity of your skin.
- Avoid UV rays (natural sun & tanning beds) for 12-24 hours post waxing.
- Resist the sauna & steam rooms.
- Sexual activity should be avoided for at least 24 - 48 hours (this pertains to those who have had a Bikini, French Bikini or Brazilian wax done)
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does my hair have to be before receiving a wax service? In order to be considered "waxable" the hair should be 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch in length or three weeks of hair growth from the last time you shaved.
I heard the longer the hair the better the hair removal, is this true? The longer the better! The more follicles/roots we can pull, the cleaner the wax, the longer it is going to last and the happier you are going to be! The "grow out" stage is often the most difficult step, but the longer the hair is, the cleaner the waxing will turn out. However, this does not mean to let your hair grow like a "woolly mammoth". Having the hair too long may prevent the wax from penetrating all the way through the hair and to the hair follicles, thereby causing pain. It's a good idea to trim (not shave) the hair to a length of 1/4-1/2 inch or 3 weeks of hair growth.
I'm underage, can I still get waxed? The Wax Effect does not perform Brazilian on anyone underage. For any other wax services, you must have a parent accompany you during the service.
Will my Esthetician trim my hair prior to an Underarm, Brazilain or Bikini service? No. For sanitation purposes and to ensure penetration of the wax through the hair, the client is responsible for trimming the pubic hair prior to a wax service.
Will waxing make the hair grow back more? Waxing does not make the hair grow back faster or more coarse. With time and regular waxing services, you will notice that the hair begins to thin out a bit.
I just shaved my bikini area and now I want to get a Brazilian. How long should I wait before having a Brazilian wax service?
Please allow three to four weeks of hair growth before waxing.
How often should I wax? Four weeks is recommended for body waxing and three weeks for eyebrow waxing. Every individual is different and waxing intervals will vary. However, body waxing every four to five weeks allows for a less painful experience.
Why do you offer "bottom" and "between the cheeks" wax service? I offer this service to individuals who prefer shaving their bikini area, but still want a smooth clean bottom or between the cheeks feel.
Can I go tanning after my wax? This may not be a good idea. However, if you're going to tan anyway, be sure to wait at least 2 days and cover the newly waxed area as your skin will be sensitive and can burn.
Is a Brazilian or Bikini wax painful? The procedure, like any waxing, can be painful at first, but frequent visits usually cuts down on the pain factor. I suggest taking 2 Advil an hour before your procedure. To make you feel less sensitive during your wax session, try to avoid caffeine, stress and nicotine. Be sure to have lots of sleep so that you can relax on the day.
The technique used by the Esthetician is very important on cutting down on the pain as well.
Will I get ingrown bumps after a bikini or Brazilian wax? This would not be unheard of. Ingrown hairs are caused when the growing hair curls under the skin. Avoid ingrown hairs with regular exfoliation and waxing. The esthetician will spread soothing lotion over the waxed areas. Luckily for you, THE WAX EFFECT offers the best post wax products, such as Tu'el Detox Bath Gel.
What is the purpose of talcum powder or oil? At times, the esthetician will spread talcum powder, cornstarch powder or oil around the area to be waxed. The application prevents the hot wax from sticking to the skin and also allows the hard wax to form faster.
Does the Esthetician use a hard wax or strip wax for a Brazilian? Hard wax should be used in the more sensitive areas. Hard wax does not stick to the skin and if used correctly will result in a more comfortable waxing experience. THE WAX EFFECT does not use a strip wax for a bikini or brazilian as the pull can be too aggressive and can cause bruising. The results of a strip wax are not as impressive as they are with a hard wax.
How long does it take to perform a Brazilian Wax? Times vary for each individual for numerous reasons. I block an hour for new clients as I have no way of knowing what to expect at the initial visit. However, after the first couple visits and with regular waxing every four weeks, time is usually decreased. Do not expect a "quickie" 10 minute wax service as some other locations may advertise. How fast your esthetician can wax does not necessarily mean you received a good, clean and thorough service.
Although I'm efficient, I also perform a detailed wax service and I'm sensitive to your needs and requests.
Do you perform waxing, bikini or brazilian on male anatomical body parts? THE WAX EFFECT does not specialize in male anatomical body waxing services at this time. If this changes in the future, the list of male waxing services will be updated.
When are you most busy during the year? Spring, Summer and during Valentines Day.
What service do you perform the most? Brazilian, Bikini and underarm.
Can I schedule a same day appointment? There are times when we may have an open slot due to a cancellation or reschedule. However, it is recommended that you schedule an appointment with at least (1-2) weeks notice to ensure your desired date and time is available. Advance scheduling also allows your appointment to be entirely devoted to you without any "rushing".
Should I reschedule before I leave the studio? Yes, for the same reasons that are mentioned above
Do you wax clients who are pregnant? THE WAX EFFECT has waxed plenty of women who are pregnant. However, from a liability and safety standpoint, we no longer wax pregnant clients toward the end of term, unless the client has waxed with us throughout their pregnancy.
Do you accept gratuity? Gratuity is always most appreciated, but not required.
Do you offer facials? Yes, facials are a passion of Mari! Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, facials have been placed on hold. I look forward to offering updated skincare services in the near future. Stay tuned!
